To the Editor: The euthanasia of more than 1,000 dogs and cats at the main animal shelter in Las Vegas is surely a major tragedy in the sheltering field (news article , Feb. 16), and the rapid spread of diseases at a facility packed with 1,800 animals required swift action to prevent even more suffering and loss of life.

Some of our professional Chaplains also provide other services (euthanasia visits, memorial services, congregational sermons, etc.) We are the Interfaith Association of Animal Chaplains. We provide scriptural / spiritual support and free phone counseling to bereaved pet owners.

The bird was stripped of feathers and so badly battered that euthanasia was probable. With all of her photos, she follows NANPA ethical guidelines, putting the welfare of birds and other wild animals ahead of any image. . A year later, in a new city and at a new wildlife hospital, I got my official volunteer apron and badge.

Now, if hunters were in the woods seeking out injured, dying, starving animals, and ending their lives in a way that most would call euthanasia, I might be able to get on board with the compassionate-bullet theory. Tags: Activism Ethics Language Cayuga deer hunting. But that's not what happens.

Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia. The word "euthanasia" means good, gentle, or easy ( eu ) death ( thanos ). The paradigm case of euthanasia is where a sentient being is terminally ill, will die soon anyway, and is in great pain. Euthanasia is often called mercy killing, for obvious reasons: Its motive is mercy.

I then sat at my trusty computer and checkout out the American Veterinary Medical Association's latest report on euthanasia (they publish one every couple of years), and let’s just say that hypothermia and rapid freezing are on a list that includes: strychnine, which causes violent convulsions and painful muscle contractions; drowning, and burning.
