They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. The bird was stripped of feathers and so badly battered that euthanasia was probable. But, we’re facing a world of shrinking biodiversity and depressingly-high bird kill numbers that demand an accounting outside of our self interest.

Let's deconstruct: What we have here is the myth that killing animals in the wild and then eating them is somehow a compassionate act. It's difficult for me to understand how the act of thanking a god, who likely doesn't even exist, would matter to the nonhuman animal who is killed for the crime of being a nuisance to a human animal.

Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia. The word "euthanasia" means good, gentle, or easy ( eu ) death ( thanos ). The paradigm case of euthanasia is where a sentient being is terminally ill, will die soon anyway, and is in great pain. Euthanasia is often called mercy killing, for obvious reasons: Its motive is mercy.
