There are still very real threats of predation by feral cats and birds of prey, but we just have to be optimistic. Five years ago there was actually a successful breeding event where all three eggs, instead of the usual two, hatched and fledged. It is definitely time for a successful breeding season for at least one pair this year.

In any event, there is the distinct possibility that Wild Turkeys in North America today form a kind of squished up ring species, with an entirely anthropogenic European arm. Thus, the cattle we raise for meat and dairy are sometimes called Bos taurus while the extinct wild form is always called Bos primigenius. Which would be weird.

Also, in relatively natural, or wild, lands in much of the US the feral cat population will be limited by a healthy wild predator population. While cats do not fill a specific niche normally held by a native carnivore, there are reasons to believe that some of those birds would have been eaten by a wild predator had the cats not been in play.

More feral flavors – produced by Haviken’s wild yeast and sur lie aging – skulk around the edges, evoking leather and even the iron-like tinge of blood. I found the roasted, “porter-esque” qualities promised in the brewery’s description somewhat muted but there was a discernible hint of cocoa.
