A Japanese book on Hokkaido birds lists 6 species of woodpeckers – I saw three of them, presumably the most common ones. Indeed, the species seems quite adaptable to changing environmental conditions. For example, is there the equivalent of a “mansplaining” drum pattern only used by the males?

The paper cites the example of the Blue-footed Booby: Its foot color becomes duller when the birds are malnourished.
