This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. As the sun began to set, a flock of Mexican Parrotlets alighted in a tree with brilliant red bark, and we all noticed a Bat Falcon watching silently from a high perch above all the action down below.

But I’ll trade Red-taileds any day for a Northern Harrier , a lovely pair of Peregrine Falcons , and the surprising presence of a pair of Crested Caracaras , normally seen at much lower elevations. A wonderfully close Peregrine Falcon. Believe it or not, Caracaras (in spite of their 4-foot wingspan) are falcons, not hawks.

After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be. The hide overlooking the breeding colony of Red-footed Falcons. Both benches were turned towards the table, hence one had its back towards the reserve! And, of course, there was a group of youngsters barbecuing.

Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations. After all, the Shoebill isn’t endemic to the country; only Fox’s Weaver currently holds that title.

A pair of Jabiru were locked in a chase, one tucked in its eight foot wingspan and made a dive not too dissimilar from that of a falcon. Cameras were still tucked away, but the experience left us all without words. The second bird followed suit, physics itself noisily straining to keep the bird airborne as it wheeled overhead.

For me, these birds add a bit of mystique and mystery to the overall experience. The Florida Keys Hawkwatch at Curry Hammock regularly produces spectacular numbers of Peregrine Falcon. For a couple of weeks in October, the Florida Keys Hawkwatch regularly tallies 3-digit Peregrine Falcon flights — up to 500 in a single day.

The lagoon outside offered other experiences too. It was exciting to discover local Peregrine Falcons surveying Bolinas Lagoon and getting to know the tides helped me find secretive Clapper Rails on the edge of SF Bay. So still that a Red-shouldered Hawk once used me as cover while sneaking up on some pigeons. I was transfixed.

Birding the Dry Tortugas in late April has always been high on my bucket-list of the best birding experiences in North America. Day-trips to the Dry Tortugas are of course possible but the best way to experience the islands is on an extended 3-day guided tour.
