His Best Bird of the Weekend was a young Red-tailed Hawk that landed close by the beginner bird walk he was leading at the Queens Botanical Garden for New York City Audubon. How did it go for you? I had racked up only twenty-odd species, all of which I’d have to be blindfolded to not see if I spent a year in New York City. On the whole, though, I had a lovely experience with the Naturas, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone who is looking for binoculars long on brightness and short on neck pain.

It was an exciting experience to see this heron going about its business from close range, close enough that I could hear the crabs being crushed. The Marine Nature Study Area is well worth a visit and I highly recommend that birders coming to the New York City area stop by.

Case in point: Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was the one he headed out west to meet me for, the first New York record of Garganey ! Though the views were distant and the duck was small, the sight of the cute little dabbler (seen in photo with Wood Duck ) made the five-hour ride back to New York City much more tolerable!
