This last December, I had the chance to bird the rainforest of Southeastern Peru, as part of the second International Birding Rally in Southeastern Peru. Adam and Tim are experienced Florida birders with varying degrees of experience when birding the Tropical Rainforests. Many of these birds were lifers for them.

One of my highlight stories was my first experience with the sounds of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron. During my first few knights in the rainforest of eastern Peru, I knew nothing about animal vocalizations. Lots of insects vocalizing at a time was one cool experience. Needless to say the sounds of the night were overwhelming.

Alfredo Begazo grew up with Peruvian Meadowlarks and Marvelous Spatuletails, and was used to waking up to the morning choruses of Pacific Doves in Lima, Peru. Alfredo, an experienced birder in Peru and well-rounded naturalist, founded a birding and nature eco-travel company , known as Surbound Expeditions (Sur=Spanish for south).

17%: Ecuador, Peru. While Peru was seen as the best country for “birds and ancient sites”, Ecuador was seen as “much safer” and best for its size and easiness of getting around. They would like to experience it, but have no sufficient knowledge of its birding possibilities to choose one, or a few, instead of a continent as a whole.

The ones in Costa Rica don’t sound like those in South America so keep that in mind if you have already seen it in, say, Southeastern Peru. Ochre-breasted Antpitta : Ok, I have to admit that I’m less sure about this one being different from the taxa often seen by birders in Mindo, Colombia, and Peru.

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. It was easily one of the best birding experiences I’ve ever had, even impressing my nonbirder fiance. You can read more about his experience here.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others. To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue.

Today we are looking at two species that can be difficult to separate under typical field conditions.
