No, Madagascar is the most famous for an endemic group of mammals: lemurs, sifakas, indri, aye-aye – in total, 112 endemic species and subspecies of lemurs alone! Still, there should be no problem with larger species that allow for longer observation time (e.g. Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales.

12 species of cuckoos are on the Costa Rica bird list. This Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo was seen and captured on camera by Josh Beck in Panama, the most reliable place to connect with this rare species. Many a birder with years of experience in the Neotropical region has never ever seen or heard an RVG.

The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. My only other experience with an Audubon Club field trip anywhere, on a cold October morning in the American Midwest, was frankly kind of a bust. But this one was a wonderful experience. According to my list, which somehow ended up being the official group list, we saw 41 species in about four hours. Both were welcome additions.

And what better way to do it than to fortuitously come upon a fruiting tree being attended to by a multitude of species? When we got there, it was still too dark to distinguish species feeding in the canopy. Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper on the island and are much more often heard than seen.

I finally chased down what has been a nemesis species for me at Webster Park, which seems to be one of Rochester’s most reliable winter finch hotspots. He also enjoyed Red Crossbills this weekend, but in Queens, only the second time he’s seen the species in his home borough and the first in over ten years!
