But his Best Bird of the Weekend was one he saw with his family on a visit to Jamaica Bay on Saturday evening. A distant American White Pelican on the East Pond was Corey’s 264th species in Queens this year, which tops his previous best by three species. Corey enjoyed some good birding on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Did the Black-bellied Whistling Duck represent his family, “showing face” as we say here in the Caribbean? Paying respects? Was it some sort of funeral?

I love to see the new growth on our dozens of oak species. A brief mixed flock experience included this Grace’s Warbler , which is one of our relatively few resident warblers down here. April bears the most fruit for my family tree, including my own bad apple birthday this week. Does your family celebrate a lot of April birthdays? Phoebes are proud members (at least they seem so) of the Family Tyrannidae , the tyrant flycatchers. Of the more than 400 tyrannids, as birds in this family are sometimes called, only three belong to the genus Sayornis , the phoebes. In fact, this is one species that seems to thrive in the face of rampant development.

By age 2 she could identify over 10 species of birds in our Johannesburg, South Africa, yard by call alone. Astounding because she picked up birding before she could speak and surprising because this ability was definitely not inherited from anyone in my family, myself included. Considering Broome often experiences cyclones and strong winds it does make sense for the birds to build a more substantial nest to survive the extreme weather. The Crested Pigeon family remained in the tree away from danger for quite some time with both parents present.

A type of birding experience that I greatly enjoy is one of those moments where I’ve come across a simply huge number of birds. It can be during migration, in an enormous nesting colony, or with a very gregarious species. It was June 14 in 2008, when we stopped by the dam for a nice walk after lunch with family in the mountains.
