In that spirit, Corey chose the lowly feral Rock Pigeon as his Best Bird of the Weekend. While appreciating the action at my feeder, I happily noted one White-throated Sparrow adjacent to but not mixed in with the basic House Sparrows. That means grassy fields are loaded with sparrows, hummocks are filled with wood-warblers, and wetlands teem with waterfowl. Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. I currently have 164 species on my Florida life list, which has been built entirely upon my two previous experiences at Space Coast.

I am only including them in this post to give you my real-life Kabul experience … Four species are the most easily seen in the few urban parks (into which women are not actually allowed to enter – I am not sure about female birds).

Over the next few days, I found increasing numbers, goldfinches, juncos, white-throated sparrows. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. I hoped it was an anomaly. Were they always there and I just never noticed? There are far fewer photographs of dead birds than I expected.
