Food for a fledgling thrush is abundant in June with everything from ripe cherries on the trees to loads of snails crawling through the leaf litter. It is a fledgling Song Thrush being attended by a parent outside of the wonderful Nomad Hotel in Hungary’s Bükk Hills.
And sure, it’s really great to see the Scrub Jays at the pay station at Cape Canaveral or the Scrub Jay trail at Merritt Island, but if you want to really experience the Scrub Jays, you have to travel down the road to Rockledge and visit Cruickshank Sanctuary. But honestly, part of that is a peanuts.
The water this Northern Pintail is in has human poo in it, which completely ruins the experience of seeing this bird. I know part of the experience of birding is taking in the beauty of the outdoors, but (call me crazy) I’m actually in it for the birds. Oh wait, it doesn’t. Radio Road, Redwood Shores, CA.
All three of those authors have far more experience than I do and the upcoming releases for next spring, California and Pennsylvania, are written by authors just as illustrious! One such surprising experience happened with grouse. In keeping with gamebird tradition, my first experience with grouse wasn’t one of a bird on a branch or something singing from a tree. Watch and listen for the birds as they rustle through the leaf litter. Wood-warblers lived in those Appalachian forests, many of them!
A recent experience left me upside-down in a drift of pine needles as finding myself face-to-face with a Barred Owl was such a shock that I lost the power of standing. What is it about Owls that casts such a spell over folk?

At 6am it was still dark in the (relatively) high elevation rainforest where Golden-crowned Warblers fluttered just above the leaf litter, Collared Trogons and Hepatic Tanagers gathered to feed on the bounty of moths still on offer. I expected to learn a thing or two and possibly see some birds I had never seen before.
My first experience was with a nesting pair, one bird was out at the time and the other was comfortably sitting quite low in the nest. Nothing could move around in the leaf litter without full attention from this Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. Now, although I have seen this species several times before, we have a unique relationship.
There is a lot of extreme behavior here (and a lot of that behavior takes place in Australia), but this is not simply a collection of the world’s most fantastic bird tales. Most of the chapters in The Bird Way focus on one or two scientists who has done extensive research on ‘outlier behavior.’
Gray-necked Picathartes foraging in leaf-litter on the forest floor in Korup National Park, Cameroon. From previous experience we have had an 11/12 success rate at this site, sometimes the views are fleeting and other times the birds provide a breathtaking show! They also occur in Liberia, Ivory Coast and Guinea.
Failed to ensure that experiments minimized discomfort, distress and pain to the animals. In one case, up to 17 kittens from three litters died or were euthanized -- with no experiment data generated -- after injections to induce hydrocephalus. "It's a remarkably banal list of ordinary events in an animal-care facility."
Shearwater remains litter the island with the carcasses picked clean, leaving just the wings, breastbone and girdle. The navigating prowess of the Manx Shearwater was demonstrated in an experiment involving 2 birds that were removed from Skomer’s neighbouring island of Skokholm and taken to Boston, Massachussetts.
Unfortunately, by the nature of the problem, the history of the young field is littered with examples of researchers allowing their subconscious biases — or worse, their conscious ones — to influence how they read the data.

And, if you are part of an ongoing atlas project in your state, tell us about your experiences. Behind every distribution map, there must be a fascinating birding experience.
There is no experience comparable to birding a dump, and, I have to say, I have never experienced a dump like this one. Seeing this giant, awkward yet majestic bird walk through the densely littered landscape was a surreal experience. (4) I saw this Greater Adjutant in Assam, India, where they scavenge in the Guwahati city dump.

Once you manage to spell it correctly – which may take some time if my own Google experiences are any indication – you will find plenty of information online about the birds and the birding within this amazing park. At first I was really irritated by the crowds, by their noise and to some extend their littering.
In my mind, nothing beats traveling to memorable destinations to experience the grandeur of both human culture and natural beauty. Even better, three litters of tigers were born there last year, so tiger cubs may be seen. But can even those thoughtful gifts suffice when shopping for yourself?
