Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. Researchers can continue most experiments on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans -- after European Union lawmakers watered down proposals to restrict testing. Nothing, nothing makes me angrier than animal researchers.

Around 12 million animals are used each year in the European Union (EU) for research purposes. This became clear from a report addressed at the European Parliament (EP) session on May 5–7, which seeks to vote on a directive concerning animal research. I really hope this passes.

I really believe the more people learn about what research animals go through, the more common decency becomes a factor. But how many animal research supporters (non-scientists) actually step into a room and observe an experiment? They are too disturbed, frightened, or threatened to do so. It upsets them.

Animal Person , someone who is clearly smarter than me, has a great analysis about the recent "Pepper" series in Slate about animal research. At least he didn't try to make me feel happy or warm and fuzzy about animal research. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans.
