Visitors to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary can often see a pair roosting together in the mangrove. I walked over to a thick mango tree and sure enough, it flew out, majestic, broad, silent wings spread wide – and just like the Mottled Owl experience I described earlier – eyes fixated on me. I couldn’t believe it.

Run along the same lines as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the site has had a large fence placed around it and the introduced mammals removed. It’s a model that is now happening across New Zealand, and it was nice to experience it near my friend’s house in Taranaki.

Corey had a host of birds to choose from as his Best Bird of the Weekend as he spent Friday morning birding at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Orange County, California. He didn’t see them do a courtship dance but their elegance was more than enough to leave him happy about the experience.

Walks around the neighborhood or at a nearby wildlife sanctuary are good opportunities for kids to learn in fresh air. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially the live raptor display by well-known Master Falconer, Jonathan Wood. I was trying to find that answer for a while and it turned into a very annoying experience. The most bird-rich northeast of India includes e.g. the Kaziranga NP and the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively, together with the world’s largest Amur Falcon roost in Nagaland.

The essential spots to visit are the Akan Crane Center, Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary, and Setsurigawa Bridge. Setsurigawa Bridge must be done at dawn, and is another amazing experience – over a hundred cranes partially enshrouded by mist rising off of the river at dawn.

Small reserves such as the Khijadiya and the Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuaries in Gujarat are mostly well described. Yet, with larger protected areas things get more complicated.

An Indian paper mocks the Beautiful Sibia when discussing the range-restricted species that can be seen at an Indian birding spot, the Eaglenest Sanctuary: “… the ubiquitous Beautiful Sibia Heterophasia pulchella , a drab ashy-grey bird titled beautiful!” ” That seems a bit unfair to me.

I just watched episode 1, season 1, of Dogtown , the National Geographic Channel TV show about Dogtown at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT. My hands-on experience is with small mammals/critters and cats. We really enjoyed it. I learned a lot from this episode. I don't know much about dogs other than what I read.

I always wanted to see a bright red male and my long wait was over this December when I managed to connect with one at San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Being in a boat, digiscoping a Shoebill in the rain, was one of the best birding experiences I’ve ever had, comparable only to feeding Maria.

But the sun woke me up early this morning and I took the opportunity to run down to Karori Wildlife Sanctuary (more correctly Zealandia, snerk!) They are bred in the sanctuary for release into the wild, and are possible to see in the wild (but very difficult for obvious reasons. It was a generally pleasant experience being there.
