I don’t really know – from my own experience with school bullies or from Jack London’s novels? Finally, the list of birds mentioned in the examples include: Acorn woodpecker, Melanerpes formicivorus. I was in primary school then, probably early grades, but I knew that whatever I do, I cannot afford to turn my back to them.

In science speak, this is named the optimal body mass hypothesis. Blue T**s, Great T**s) or are predators of their nests (Great Spotted Woodpecker). One interesting (though from a Willow Tit perspective, “tragic” would be the better word) factor in the decline is bird feeding.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. Dead birds are a part of the life of a birder, a feeder of birds, and of bird science.

I imagine the female bosses the male around, but maybe I am anthropomorphizing there based on my experience in recently working on an apartment with my wife. This Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker in particular is a species I would like to get much better photos of. While the female is less hidden, sadly, it is also less attractive.

Nonprofit organizations, science, and the best intentions in the world came to the rescue with a captive breeding program, and we now have over 400 Pink Pigeons living in Mauritius, the nearby island of Ile aux Aigrettes, and the zoos hosting the breeding program, including the Bronx Zoo. Is this the type of avian experience we want?
