My weekend was actually pretty slow from a wildlife appreciation angle, but the bare husks of coneflowers in my garden are still drawing curious American Goldfinches. The tour was organised by the Natural Greece ecotourism specialists from Athens, Greece, in collaboration with the Callisto wildlife charity which has done a lot of work on bears in this area.

In between ice storms, I visited Brighton’s Brickyard Trail, a nice little walk that can be excellent for sparrows. What do you know, I spotted my FOY Swamp Sparrow in song, along with about a hundred Song Sparrows , also in song. Migrants are on the move, if you can bear to be out looking for them! My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count. It could have been any of those from among the over 100 species that crossed Corey’s path this weekend but of them all he chose the singing Henslow’s Sparrow at the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge as this state-threatened species is hard to see and it gave Corey the best looks he ever had of the species.

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. I picked up a number of striking lifers, like the Great Sparrow, Crimson Shrike, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Chestnut-backed Sparrowlark, Abdim’s Stork, Southern Pied Babbler , Purple Rollers, Black-throated Canary and my personal favourite, the Violet-eared Waxbill.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Which has always mystified me slightly.

This past January, however, my experience was even better. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. A White-crowned Sparrow is always a beautiful subject!
