One of the amazing aspects of Brigantine in late spring is the sheer volume of turtles one can encounter. On a single trip I have seen four species of turtle, which must be my all time high in one day. Happy turtling! They are also easily my favorite species of turtle.

Take me to Church

It was a very disorienting experience. But the turtle action was pretty intense. Sorry about this perch; these Mud Turtles are taking the sun on a discarded Mexican-made General Popo-brand tire. I saw 57 species in the area, which is pretty good for the church neighborhood. Three species especially stood out.

Shearwater Chase in Costa Rica

Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle. Were there going to be any birds?

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. Where once there were 13 species of “Darwin’s finches,” there are now 17. I wish I had read this book.
