It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.
Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species.
At least I didn’t have to travel far for great birds; my whole family thrilled to the sight of an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk chowing down on an unspecified rodent in our yard. Of those he did see, he most enjoyed the flyover Pileated Woodpecker in his hometown, a treat for a resident of New York City, and Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend.
But Corey also hit up the Forest Park bird feeders with his family Saturday afternoon and Desi, his five-year-old, was so taken with a Red-bellied Woodpecker (the one above) that Corey had to choose it as his favorite bird of the weekend too. North America is home to many amazing bird species, including several which require a special effort to see and appreciate.
This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers.

Buff-streaked Chats and Cape Rock-Thrushes sing from boulder tops, and family huddles of Ground Woodpeckers emit their rather gull-like shrieks.
I am still tired from the long drive, but it was great to play with the very best toys for birders, to be able to share experiences and to ask the factory staff all sorts of silly questions. Yesterday evening I got home from the second Swarovski Skills Camp at Lake Neusiedl in the east of Austria. impressive for Central Europe.
In this first installment, I will focus on my impressions and experiences in the highlands portion of our tour. Many Neotropical families and genera have some of their northernmost members here, such as the spinetails ( Rufous-breasted Spinetail ), Tangara tanagers ( Azure-rumped Tanager ), and guans ( Horned Guan ).
So much so that the two species are placed within their own family, Chaetopidae. And then there are the Ground Woodpeckers ! These are one of only three ground-dwelling woodpeckers in the world. Having jumped around a bit while writing up my trip to Hungary – sharing a few galleries , a trip to find an elusive woodpecker , and the most exciting news in optics since Galileo discovered Jupiter’s moons – I thought it was time to go back to the beginning of the trip and proceed chronologically.
The fleeting photo of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker tugs at and flies away with a piece of the heart, that final image of a Slender-billed Curlew is difficult to look at, it’s a stab deep inside. In the era of digital cameras and social media, images of birds are easy to come by.
For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. While the idea of a Ground Woodpecker sounds a bit absurd, it helps to know that this species mostly lives on ants, similar to the Wryneck (another woodpecker, though it does not look much like one). A challenge for young birders, maybe.
As I have mentioned repeatedly over the past months, life this spring has gone topsy-turvy in central Mexico, as we experience what has certainly been one of our driest years in history. Motmots definitely make up one of the bird world’s glamour families. Western Mexico offers only one, the endemic Russet-crowned Motmot.
Many of these species were very high on my life bird wish list, and the country itself would be a totally new experience: a vibrant and enchanting culture, a varied and tasty cuisine, and stunning and new landscapes. Unlike most other members of the family, this species of motmot occurs in quite open and dry habitats. Time flew by.
