They became known as “Turkie Fowl” (spelling varies) because they were coming from the general direction of Turkey. The selections appear to largely reflect Hauber’s personal experiences around the world and he does occasionally bring himself into the essay, reflecting on a European Robin he observes at dusk in northwestern Germany or searching for American Robin nests on a tree farm in the Midwestern United States.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. However, he went far afield to find a more familiar fowl. I wrote about the experience here. This may sound mundane, but my Best Bird of the Year is a species we all know quite well in one form or another.
