Experience is the best teacher, we’re told, but sometimes past experience can be misleading. Past experience? It doesn’t take much for them to learn that we need them to find human scent –and not other animals, dropped hamburgers, or unspecified gook. Avoid Hasty Conclusions. What is it that makes us doubt?

In the first case, there is no way around the suggestion, which many people appear to believe, that animal experience is so lacking in intensity that the pains of animals are overridden by the pleasures experienced by human beings. Think of the difference between eating a hamburger and eating a veggie burger, for example.

This weekend was meant to draw kids into the Hamburg, PA Cabela’s to experience birds in a up-close and personal kind of way. Adrian Binns ( Nikon Birding ProStaff and Wildside Nature Tours ) brought up two vans of children from the Philadelphia area for a chance to experience all of the activities and be filmed on camera.

Trying to breed the species in an aviary provided some disappointments, for example with regard to their nest-building abilities: “I don’t know what previous experience the birds had at nest construction, but their attempt was pretty pathetic” ( source ). I think I pointed out in previous posts that mammals are kind of evil.

Of course, when hamburgers aren't at stake, most of us think that it would be morally wrong to kill an animal for no good reason. However, the above rationalization does not directly address the issue of contributing to the unnecessary killing of a conscious sentient being.
