My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. Laughing Owl, 1909, New Zealand, photo taken by Cuthbert and Oliver Parr, pp. The Laughing Owl of New Zealand exhibited an apparent lack of fear of strangers and a propensity to spend time on the ground, making it easy pickings for introduced predators. Their photos are the only known ones taken of the owl in the wild.

I have had similar experiences at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and you are so right on when you say “am I ever glad that I am a birder!&# It was a great experience. What a spectacle indeed. Apparently in the past some birders and photographers had been not so polite in their behavior when a Northern Hawk Owl had been in the vicinity, and when this bird showed up the local law enforcement did not want it made public.

I was smart enough to chase a Snowy Owl at Sodus Point. The very handsome bird wasn’t hanging out where expected, but I was lucky enough to spy it chilling (literally) on an ice-encrusted pier, unperturbed by the duck hunters that chased everything else away!
