Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of August 2012?

The summer span of school-free days from late June to early September always seemed to me to be an experience all United States students held in common. Thus, I was surprised and a little saddened to learn from my Kentucky family that kids in the Bluegrass State go back to school next week. Maybe Kentucky has it right.

Both falconers and wildlife rehabilitators have to study, gain experience, and jump through various hoops in order to get their licenses. You can own a yak in Kentucky, but not a cheetah in Maine. But in many states, any idiot with 20 bucks can get a permit to own a non-native, captive-bred bird of prey.
