Assuming that your over-worked eyes are as blurry as mine at the moment, we should get right down to business and talk birds… The best of the many warblers I uncovered at Cobbs Hill this weekend was an entirely improbable Kentucky Warbler. The summer span of school-free days from late June to early September always seemed to me to be an experience all United States students held in common. Thus, I was surprised and a little saddened to learn from my Kentucky family that kids in the Bluegrass State go back to school next week. Maybe Kentucky has it right.

Though Corey managed to see or hear 135 species this weekend including such good birds as Yellow-bellied Flycatcher , Piping Plover , Yellow-billed Cuckoo , Kentucky Warbler , Bay-breasted Warbler , and a host of others, his Best Bird of the Weekend was a commonly seen bird, albeit a very cooperative one. Both falconers and wildlife rehabilitators have to study, gain experience, and jump through various hoops in order to get their licenses. You can own a yak in Kentucky, but not a cheetah in Maine. But in many states, any idiot with 20 bucks can get a permit to own a non-native, captive-bred bird of prey.
