Having more than 1300 bird species, including over 75 endemics, it is hard to resist the lure of India – something I know from personal experience. Hence, it was a bit of an annoyance to be forced to hire a general nature guide who knows mostly mammals.

Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. We arrived at the rather untouristy seasite town of Lahad Datu where our guide dropped us off at the office of the lodge.

And even though transportation is so easy and inexpensive, prepare to walk a lot. I read that the Peak was a great place for thrushes in winter; experience proved the veracity of that observation, but you’ll need to examine the underbrush closely. BONUS MAMMAL SPECIES LIST. The food was better than decent, which exceeds our experience of Panamanian cuisine at most other locations. Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site.
