On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. in the morning.

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India.

In the next year I visited the British Birdfair for the first time, which turned out to be the experience that changed my life. With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round. In 2008, with my family decided to build the Limneo Lodge , a small accommodation with only 9 rooms.

A car also doubles as a good hide – many species will not respond to it (from personal experience, not just birds, but otters too). My colleague is a more aggressive driver and he had to call the local farmer for tractor assistance more than once. They are especially suitable for open terrains and larger birds.

However, the great birding experience that is Sani starts lower down. Both species of southern African otters are also regularly encountered ( Cape Clawless and Spot-necked.). White-bellied Parrot was one of many target species at either of the canopy towers. ” At first light, many of the larger canopy species commute and call from the canopy: parrots, cotingas, guans, and toucans. 4:30AM: It is time to wake up! The area is one of the most important in Greece for birds, comprising more than 270 species. Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. Yet, much closer to me, on a bare salty ground, a little brown bird took flight singing her heart out.
