He missed Brown Pelicans , a Brown Booby , and dozens of Great Shearwaters. Fortunately, there is whale-watching happening on the American Princess, out of Brooklyn, but spending lots of times in Queens waters. Lastly, due to its previous inaccessibility to humans and the absence of natural predators, the wildlife is bizarrely unafraid of humans, allowing for a truly unforgettable experience. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel. It is a wonderful spot to watch the humpback whales breach in the crystal-clear waters.

It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. Sooty Shearwaters and a Western Gull fly back the aftermath of a Humpback Whale breaching. Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae. It was amazing.

The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience. I just happened to be there to experience it. There were also countless Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, and Heermann’s Gulls, creating quite the cacophony. Of course, unexpected experiences such as this are one of the great appeals of birding.

It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal. We saw two Blue Whales on our trip, quickly identified by the boat’s crew.
