I thought I would talk about our team’s performance in the World Birding Rally Challenge in Northern Peru and the side attractions along the route. Hugh made things easier on me, as now I will only talk about other nature and cultural sites along the route covered in the Northern Peru World Birding Rally Challenge.

This last December, I had the chance to bird the rainforest of Southeastern Peru, as part of the second International Birding Rally in Southeastern Peru. Adam and Tim are experienced Florida birders with varying degrees of experience when birding the Tropical Rainforests. Many of these birds were lifers for them.
They offer multiple packages and we took a five day trip that took us right down to the border with Peru. My wife and I took a little vacation back in February to scout this river boat service; it was one of those experiences that will always bring back many good memories and great birds.
Now that Winter Olympic fever has gripped the global imagination, I can’t help but wonder why we don’t have more international birding competitions like the International Birding Rally in Peru. One of my highlight stories was my first experience with the sounds of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron. During my first few knights in the rainforest of eastern Peru, I knew nothing about animal vocalizations. Lots of insects vocalizing at a time was one cool experience. Needless to say the sounds of the night were overwhelming.
It is not a concept for a total beginner, more of a reminder to someone with some experience. Voice is a sharp, piercing phrase of a double note and a harsh single note; and it inhabits undergrowth at borders of forest, woodland and riverine belts, while its range stretches from W Ecuador to NW Peru.
They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Pelagic birding off the Atlantic coast of Florida can be a frustrating experience, usually involving long waits of up to an hour or more interspersed with brief flurries of activity — a far cry from pelagic birding off of coasts blessed with cold water currents and nutrient rich upwelling such as California, southeast Australia, and Peru.

Although we don’t really have a chance to top the numbers of birds identified in mega birdy places like Peru, Colombia, or even Mexico, we still do our best to make it into the top ten and at least see if we can beat the record from the previous year. Costa Rica is one of those places.

The ones in Costa Rica don’t sound like those in South America so keep that in mind if you have already seen it in, say, Southeastern Peru. Ochre-breasted Antpitta : Ok, I have to admit that I’m less sure about this one being different from the taxa often seen by birders in Mindo, Colombia, and Peru.

The birds that I have experience with, like some of the raptors, wading birds, shorebirds, and tanagers, are all true-to-life in color, shape, and proportions to say nothing of being pretty paintings, if slightly sterile on the standard plain white background. of species of bird that birders the world over desperately want to experience.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others. To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue.

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience.
