Adrian Binns ( Nikon Birding ProStaff and Wildside Nature Tours ) brought up two vans of children from the Philadelphia area for a chance to experience all of the activities and be filmed on camera.

” At Jamaica Bay in August the standard peep is the Semipalmated Sandpiper , which is present in the hundreds or even thousands. Next most common is the Least Sandpiper , which is typically present in the tens to hundreds. It was a wonderful experience and I thought it only made sense to share some of it with you.

We were only in the area for three minutes to minimise disturbance, but by keeping our distance I was able to capture them behaving as if we were not present. It was a memorable experience to observe the pair of Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens meet up on the branch and preen together. Female Purple-crowned Fairy-wren.

The sight, the sound and the smell, coupled with the sheer spectacle of seeing so many birds at once, makes viewing a big seabird colony an avian experience that can’t be compared with any other. Nobody knows whether the single pair bred successfully – it seems unlikely that they did – but they were present throughout the summer.
