The 1,500 km route included a great diversity of habitat types, elevations along the west and east facing slopes of the Andes, jaw dropping landscapes, contrasting microclimates, cultural diversity and a potential list of well over 1,000 species. The story is etched into my memory not for my experience with the bird, which was an obstructed view of a singing male through a mess of dense underbrush at about 100 feet, but for the effort it took to get there. One of our target species was Swainson’s Warbler. Warblers of other species were plentiful.

The Common Raven is found across the northern hemisphere and because of this huge range and its large and growing population it is considered a Species of Least Concern by BirdLife International. The book ends with a country checklist, 449 species long, and the contacts of the managing authorities of protected areas. Based on the areas I have experience with, I would say that the text is highly informative and that the authors – Vlachos, Trigou and Stavrakas – know their subject in depth.

I observed this species in the Little Rann of Kutch in India and since then, have been burning with desire to see them back home. The world record holder is the town of Kikinda, further north, with 700 birds in their town square which has recently become an officially protected owl habitat – a small, urban nature reserve.

It was not easy to get photos, both because the cloud cover was dense, and because I was protecting my camera from water damage. What I feel right now is joy at their return.

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. Where once there were 13 species of “Darwin’s finches,” there are now 17. I wish I had read this book.

Go to Hispaniola and a birder has the pleasure of admiring two species of tody for the price of one, checking out the odd, mono familiar Palmchat , and listening to the parrotish calls of the White-necked Crow. That changes in Costa Rica, where the vulnerable Great Curassow is easily seen at several protected sites. In Costa Rica, it’s pretty common and easy to see in and near just about any protected forest.

Lovely Cotinga is the flagship species at Pico Bonito, where it is perhaps easier to see than anywhere else within its range. More than 400 species have been recorded at the lodge to date. They diverged at approximately the same time as the rockjumpers (two quite unique bird species endemic to Southern Africa and now in their own family), and as a result for a while were even placed in the same family. Forest cover in both species’ ranges is being destroyed at an unsustainable rate and these birds’ populations are dwindling.

I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Leaving from the harbour on boats were tours to swim with one of New Zealand’s most endangered mammal species, the Hector’s Dolphin. It wasn’t long before we saw them, either.

The Outer Banks are known for their spectacular sand beaches, and in the protected areas these sand expanses are wide and largely free of visitors during the early summer. They formed their little clumps along the water, all the species mixed together until a walker approached too closely. Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Next stop: the dunes.
