In Costa Rica, although I did spend a memorable one years ago in the Osa Peninsula where flocks of parrots flew into the mangroves while we feasted on turkey, pie, and the works, we have no actual Wild Turkeys , nor an official Thanksgiving.

Africa’s endangered species

One of Africa’s truly exhilarating experiences is watching and listening to a honking flock of these massive birds as they appear out of the early morning mists over a wetland, to land nearby and start their wing-flapping and jumping displays. Around 3,000 birds summered and bred at Birecik in the 1930’s but this declined to only 400 by 1982.

Camas and Cranes

Today, the camas fields rest protected in the vast bosom of the Clearwater National Forest. Along this journey from pass to valley and back again, we spotted Wild Turkey and Western Wood Pee-wee , Ravens and Red-tailed Hawks , mule deer and elk, even the white-striped tail of a Dark-eyed Junco disappearing into the shadow of the trees.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

And unlike the protection of cormorants, which was perceived as a problem, protection of pelicans was welcomed by the local communities. Asian water buffaloes were brought to Greece by Ottoman Turks centuries ago and by now, they have developed into a separate race, the Greek buffalo, which is protected as an old domestic breed.

Here are some highlights and observations of that very birdy weekend at Selva Bananito: There are a lot of pewees that pass through Costa Rica : Based on past experiences of pewee mania, I already knew this to be the case but this trip really took the cake. I think we saw more than 30 Bay-breasteds in one day, in one fairly small area.
