Patience, thus, is key.

As I walked around to the tip of the point the numbers of gannets kept increasing and I saw that they were continuing to come around the point and into the harbor. My experience of Common Nighthawks had previously been at dusk as they begin hunting for the night. The white wingbar of a Lesser Nighthawk is usually visible beyond the tips of the tertials. My first sightings were on a rubbish tip not far from the town of Brasov in Transylvania. I can say in my experience this is the sort of thing that is more obvious in some birds than others. In my experience this is still a difficult-ish thing to judge in the field as counting primaries on a flying bird, even one as lackadaisical as a crow, is no easy task. The bill is slightly slimmer, as well, and the legs are shorter.
