It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. On another trip, this time to Slovakia, I heard wolves howling, a wonderfully spine-tingling sound. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting.
The park also has Cheetahs and Painted Wolves (and while I didn’t see the later, they are fairly reliable). But I think it should be on the list of anyone that wants a knockout experience to share with non-birders. I stayed with Mosetlha Bush Camp and would highly recommend them for a unique bush experience. Or Cheetahs.
Depending on a visitor’s luck, one can see moose and wolves, hear Boreal Owls or Townsend’s Warblers. That was then. Today, the camas fields rest protected in the vast bosom of the Clearwater National Forest. But the camas themselves require no luck, only timing.
Wolves, for example–the probable ancestors of dogs–live in packs that hunt together and have a complex hierarchy. Hare suspects that the evolutionary pressures that turned suspicious wolves into outgoing dogs were similar to the ones that turned combative apes into cooperative humans. Evolving Gifts.
This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. She is one of the best nature writers I’ve encountered in recent years, able to paint experiences with emotional immediacy. Northern Fulmar, image courtesy of Peter Hodum.
While some people never overcome this vestigial aversion to sour and bitter sensations, this innate prejudice can be overturned with experience, becoming acquired tastes we learn to enjoy just as much as the more dependable, uncomplicated pleasures of sweetness, salt, and fat.
I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do). Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. That was one of his cats.
Seeing a wild Snow Leopard is every wildlife enthusiast’s dream, probably the ultimate and most elusive wildlife experience on the planet. Knowing this, we were certainly far from disappointed by our experience but we of course all dreamed of a closer view. Wolves can be encountered anywhere in the park.
What an incredible experience. Where the nearby military base has a pack of wolves on it. When a pair of walkers with a dog came down the path, however, it paused to look them over. The dog barked, and the bear picked up the pace as it headed away from us, finally disappearing into the grasses around the bend. It’s pretty great.
His willingness to experiment and learn resulted in his playing a significant role in defining the Grateful Dead’s distinctive sound. Bassist Phil Lesh began his career as a classical jazz musician who played trumpet; he learned bass guitar “on the job” after joining the band. He didn’t bring preconceived notions to his job.
During the filming of this production, I got to experience “dirt hawking&#. Take lions, wolves, hyenas to name a few. They have hunted together before, this pack of sky wolves. Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify).
I’m sure many of you have had similar experiences. I’m wondering as I write if you are shaking your head, uneasy that all these FACTS will interfere with your love of observing owls, an experience that easily borders on the mystical for some of us. But what do we know beyond these commonly seen and heard behaviors?
