The discussion about the environment usually originates in the massive problems created by the factory farming of sentient nonhumans. Violet was spooked early on, but Charles stayed for the entire evening.

Though factory-farming and biotechnological techniques massively violate the moral rights of farm animals, they have no remedy.

Many people exclude animals from moral consideration, even though they would never think to neglect, much less harm, a dog or a cat. Have you visited a factory farm or a slaughterhouse? So I must try to keep my morality open to revision, exposing it to whatever valid pressures there are—including pressures from my sympathies.

What these naysayers consistently neglect is that vegan diets, as with all other restricted diets, must be well planned. I’ll leave the question of infant care to the physicians, but I know firsthand that an adult vegan can enjoy robust physical health without contributing to the cruel suffering of animals on today’s factory farms.
