These family-friendly events are an opportunity for those concerned with the cruel and horrific practices of factory farming to take a stand in support of compassion for animals and raise awareness about the mistreatment of animals raised for food.
I neglected to take the camera into the courtyard in the beginning, though I did bring the hounds and their beds. The discussion about the environment usually originates in the massive problems created by the factory farming of sentient nonhumans. If you want to reduce suffering, there are indeed ways to do that.
Interests arise, Singer contends, from the capacity to feel pain, which he labels a 'prerequisite' for having interests at all; and animals can and do suffer, can and do feel pain. This, however, is precisely what factory farming does.
Many people exclude animals from moral consideration, even though they would never think to neglect, much less harm, a dog or a cat. It is natural to feel sympathy for animals who are suffering. Have you visited a factory farm or a slaughterhouse? Have you taken the time to investigate this? This is bad faith.
What these naysayers consistently neglect is that vegan diets, as with all other restricted diets, must be well planned. I’ll leave the question of infant care to the physicians, but I know firsthand that an adult vegan can enjoy robust physical health without contributing to the cruel suffering of animals on today’s factory farms.
