Specifically, the area surrounding our church is my best place to see sparrows, both residents and our (much more common) winter migratory sparrows. The one exception is the Chipping Sparrow , which can be found easily wherever there is grass. Happily, nobody would struggle to identify a Lark Sparrow.

Common birds, you see, tend to have simple names, like House Sparrow, House Finch, or House Wren. A hyphen in a bird’s “first” name can occur pretty much anywhere, which is why the United States has a good supply of birds like White-crowned Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers. But not all hypens are created equal.

Every autumn I spend an inordinate amount of time examining the edges of fields, scrubby stands of brush, and everywhere else that little brown jobs, otherwise known as sparrows, might appear. Of course, I’m always hoping to find Lark Sparrows , Grasshopper Sparrows , Clay-colored Sparrows and other about annual rarities.

Out back, a water feature at the edge of the forest saw visits from several Painted Buntings, Olive Sparrow and a few other species during the heat of the day. Olive Sparrow. Birders who feel like getting closer to these and other species can visit a portable blind set up for bird photography. Painted Bunting. King Vulture.

And not far from that scene was my personal highlight of the day, when my life Prairie Falcon swooped across the road, circled back, and came over the car only a few feet above my head, then perched with prey and let us all observe her clearly for several minutes. Normally the lighthouse is obscured in fog, but when we arrived the air was crystal clear, and in addition to seeing groups of Gray Whales migrating past, I spotted hundreds of Surf Scoters , a Pigeon Guillemot , and a pair of Peregrine Falcons from my perch atop the lighthouse cliff. Why do Lark Sparrows always show up in September in Miami and then vanish? Lark Sparrow is one of many western species that regularly migrates through or winters in South Florida in small numbers. The Florida Keys Hawkwatch at Curry Hammock regularly produces spectacular numbers of Peregrine Falcon.
