Kaziranga has one of the densest populations of Bengal Tiger in India. Here we look for sandgrouse, bush-quails, francolins, wheatears, shrikes, Laggar Falcons , eagles, buzzards, and the endangered Stolikza’s Bush Chat. We would also visit Ranthambore National Park where we hope to see more wonderful wildlife, and with luck, tiger.
Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus also lie in wait and defend their own young, just as the gulls do. We save pandas and tigers, as we should, but we don’t give as much thought to the creepy crawlies and other less-attractive creatures that also need our help. But why should we style the gull as enemy and the vulture as friend?
And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. Good times, I tell you what.
In Costa Rica, even the super shy Slaty-backed Forest-Falcon is seen more often than the island pigeon with the snow-white cap. The Bat Falcon that joined us for breakfast. . Despite part of it being chomped by cattle, we still managed a juvenile Rufescent Tiger-Heron , an excellent find for Costa Rica!

The next morning was our travel day, but we spent a couple of hours with Franklin again, tracking down a Ferruginous Pygmy-owl, Striped-headed Sparrows, a pair of Bat Falcons, Laughing falcons, Dusky-caped Flycatchers, Panama Flycatcher, Striped Cuckoo, Rufous-napped Wrens , and a bird that was high on my target list, the Double-striped Thick-knee.
