In what some might see as an unlikely alliance, wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, and – yes – hunters have banded together to convince those who hunt to use copper bullets instead of lead. The NRA has tried to portray this movement as “taking away hunters’ rights,” which does nothing but insult the hunters already on board.

Since its inception that $800 million has helped to protect over 6 million acres of habitat for wildlife and future generations. Eighty years of Duck Stamp sales, $800 million and 6 million acres protected?

The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. However this classification is no longer widely accepted, and in my opinion quite correctly so.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.

At first, the road is paved, but as soon as the tarmac ends, the tracks become decorated by hunters in orange vests. The soil is disturbed by foraging boars (and there is not a single shot from those hunters). By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air!

But the sleekest of the sulids may be found in the family Sulidae. They are daring divers, powerful underwater swimmers, and cooperative hunters. Perhaps that explains why the Galapagos Conservation Trust raises funds to help protect the Islands’ unique wildlife and habitat through the celebration of Blue-footed Booby Day.
