Hours of available hunting are low and temperatures are extremely low. The birds that live here are tough and belong mainly to particular families of birds. Owls do particularly well here, the long nights actually working in their favour by increasing hunting time. That said… Source

Sunday morning dawned clear and cool, perfect weather in which to find some owls. Sunrise found me in a car with Rich Kelly and Seth Ausubel, on our way to Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx where we would be joined by Bob Dieterich and Gene Herskovics for an owl prowl. One owl down, two to go! We still needed Barred Owl !

A family of owls, affectionately called the Potted Plant Owls have taken up residence in a potted plant on the the balcony of South African couple Allen and Tracy. The provision of housing and food is most gratifying, I have successfully spread this joy to one of my three neighbors, who now gleefully sends me pictures of the Cocoa Thrush family on his front porch, and Green Iguanas lounging in his avocado tree. Each year, I alert him to the arrival of our guest of honor – a female Yellow Warbler.

Which tours saw the most roosting owls? This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl. Local guide and birder David Mora Vargas has been spending much of his time at his family’s farm in the Sarapiqui lowlands. Did Cope have another site for nesting Great Potoo ? How about sites for Snowcap ?
