But there is one kind of tick that I genuinely do enjoy, and as I do more and more birding it becomes harder and harder to get; new families. Getting entirely new families is easy when you start birding. Sometimes you may even lose them, like the aforementioned woodswallows which are probably no longer a family.

Honeyeaters are a large bird family (190 species) with a strong presence in Australia. It is probably a rumor that writing a post about Australia and not mentioning kangaroos is illegal, but why take the risk? ” (HBW). The result of these Australian orgies are juvenile Dusky Moorhens.

It has been our home when we have travelled with our tent to various locations over the years and is part of our life and feels like family. Although in Latin, “saltator” means “jumper”, these birds aren’t doing any kangaroo imitations. The other saltators in Costa Rica are more classic members of this odd family. It’s a funny name for birds that sort of look like a missing link between tanagers and cardinal grosbeaks but I guess it fits.

Caledonian crows live in small family groups and youngsters learn to fashion and use tools by watching adults.

A couple of Island races exist on Kangaroo Is. Along with Australian Chats, Wattlebirds, Myzomelas, Friarbirds, etc, they make up 178 species in the family Meliphagidae. and in the Bass Strait. The photos in this post are of the nominate form, from Royal National Park near Sydney.

This Wedge-tailed Eagle was sitting along side one of the roads, eyeing a small road killed Kangaroo. I really only had one full day to bird, as I had some family obligations to fulfill, so I chose to see how much I could find at the Sydney Royal Botanical Garden. This Pied Butcherbird was right at the base to Ayres Rock.
