It being mid-August in New York City there is one place where I have to be as often as I can. That place is the fabled home of shorebirds, both common and rare, the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. American Avocet on Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s East Pond. I’m so glad I’m not a shorebird.

It is my belief that the birds were migrating, though one New York birder suggested that they might have been flying out for some crepuscular feeding. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.

This cruel, cruel fate we endure in western New York torments man and beast alike. Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend.
