Family follows family with no page break, making this section a little dense. Woodpeckers are a family of focus for Tuttle-Adams.

This is a delightful book, large (8-1/2 by 11 inches), filled with Sibley’s distinctive artwork and an organized potpourri of research-based stories about the science behind bird’s lives. They portray the nesting cycles of Mallard, Red-tailed Hawk, and American Robin, illustrating the various ways in which birds create families.

I was puzzled by a couple of the birds featured in North American Songbirds ; I had never heard of Plain Titmouse nor Water Pipit. A little research revealed that these are old names of birds that have been split into different species. Scientific names don’t reflect the massive changes to species in the warbler family.

A quick study as I researched this post revealed that fully 37 Arizonan “specialties” are common birds right here where I live. So the only Patagonia I would choose to visit in the future, is the Patagonia to be found at the southern end of South America. When they go low… How about the Tyrant Flycatcher family?

Filming the plovers of Estero Lagoon Plovers are a significant part of the shorebird family, comprising 66 species worldwide. But research has shown that some plovers even use the super-sensitive soles of their feet to detect movement beneath the substrate. Masked Lapwing is a very easy bird to identify, so there is a question about how the Compact Guide works in the field when trying to identify trickier birds, like Honeyeaters, a family totally new to many North American birders.
