They are part of a family of New World Quail which includes Gambel’s, Mountain, Scaled and Montezuma Quail, as well as the Northern Bobwhite. I was puzzled by a couple of the birds featured in North American Songbirds ; I had never heard of Plain Titmouse nor Water Pipit. A little research revealed that these are old names of birds that have been split into different species. Scientific names don’t reflect the massive changes to species in the warbler family.
