Earlier this afternoon my small family made a drive out to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. We went because Desi, my four-year-old son, wanted to see a Snowy Owl after hearing about and seeing pictures of all of the owls his dad had been seeing this winter. Snowy Owl being harassed by an American Crow. That is not cheap.

The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. A pair of Tropical Screech-owls have been roosting in a cherry tree for a number of years. Both species seemed content to observe each other though.

While having somebody else raise your chicks like an attractive strategy to me, it is not without dangers. Not only does this species directly parasitize other species but also metaphorically, by imitating the sparrowhawks in its appearance and thus deterring potential predators.

This Cape Francolin was raising a family less than a hundred metres from the main gate. The gardens are particularly famous for a nesting pair of Spotted Eagle-owls. All three can be found strutting around in the grassy areas maintaining the same indifference to people that other birds treat antelope with.

If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Owls are a little different. They don’t build nests and some like Great Horned Owls take over old hawk or squirrel nests.
