In 2009 the island as returned to the local iwi (tribe), but it is still managed by the Department of Conservation.

There is also a family of Barn Owls on the premises, and I have briefly seen the largest of them (enormous!) In the area of Morelia, where I live, no parrots are to be found. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. They are great for apartment settings.

Keep looking and you might see some other members of this glittering, fast-paced family. Although more than one parrot and parakeet can forage in hedgerows, this long-tailed green bird is the most common. From here it is common to see Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots and Pink-necked Pigeons in the palm trees on the island, or perhaps a Blue-throated Bee-eater hawking from one of the large trees on the far side of the water. This tree is of the coniferous family and this bird has made its life around the southern temperate forest where this tree has been constantly destroyed to clear for farmland development.
