As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. The whole place itself is an island, but the main islands are themselves the mainland to a number of smaller islands. I’ll work on that.

This tree is of the coniferous family and this bird has made its life around the southern temperate forest where this tree has been constantly destroyed to clear for farmland development. It seemed like our luck had run out since the parrots went quiet and we could not locate the exact area of their hiding place.

Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Yellow-naped Parrot. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove. Wrenthrush.

They are members of the Parulidae family and Horneros are members of the Furnariidae family, a nice example of parallel evolution. We saw a family of three jaguars–mom, dad, and daughter–in the two full days we spent in Porto Jofre. Favorite Big Bird: This must be the year of the Jabiru for 10,000 Birds.

Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

Another native bird that quickly showed itself to me in the capital was the Polynesian Triller , a member of the cuckoo-shrike family. In particular there was a large are protected on the eastern side of the island (about a third of the island) as ‘Eua National Park.The island is less populated and quieter.
