I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California. Number 8 – Brown Pelican. It was a long wait but well worth it and Brown Pelican is an easy addition to my top ten list.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy. The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead).

The third weekend of January, I travelled to the coastal city of Acapulco to give a seminar on family finances at a church there. And my one lifer for the trip was a family of Rufous-naped Wrens that apparently live in the same garden. We saw lots of the usual Heron, Egret, Cormorant, and Pelican suspects.

Together, they are placed in the family Threskiornithidae, and they’re related to herons and egrets, pelicans, and the strange Hamerkop and Shoebill. Meanwhile, perhaps the AOU will now have enough published evidence to revise its subfamily treatment of this interesting family.

Brown Pelican – This is a bird that will just take some luck while I am staring at the ocean. Either way, the odds of actually getting a Brown Pelican in Queens are pretty low. Great Shearwater – At this point, seabirds are my weakest family in Queens with the most species having reported in the borough that I have not seen.

The week of President’s Day this year found me, my family, and some close friends spending a week in a beach house on Tybee Island, a low-lying, barrier island just east of Savannah. Boat-tailed Grackles were ubiquitous and at any time a Brown Pelican could fly overhead. It didn’t get any.

Escambia Bay was fairly calm, and it was easy to pick out the dark silhouettes of Brown Pelicans floating on the water. A lone Great Blue Heron stalked prey in the shallows, eventually taking flight when a family (and their dog) made it to the sand.

Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

Say’s Phoebe – A self-found rarity at Edgemere while accompanied by my family made my day back on 05 October 2014. Golden Eagle – Two weeks to the day after the Say’s Phoebe I was once again at Edgemere with my family and picked up a Golden Eagle flying past , a surprise bird for sure!

Taking advantage of my son, Desmond, having this past Friday off from school our small family decided to do a three-day trip somewhere. At the beach there were non stop Magnificent Frigatebirds overhead, Sandwich Terns and Royal Terns working the waves, and Brown Pelicans dropping in regularly. My third endemic lifer of the weekend!

Part of its attraction lies in it being a monotypic bird in the family Hypocoliidae – there are no other bird species in its genus and family. Because when we look at the birds that make up the family Sulidae – not just the tropical boobies, but their burly temperate-zone cousins the gannets as well – we see a pretty incredible group of birds. Osprey and Brown Pelicans can pull off some impressive dives, but the none have the panache of a Sulid.

Along the way we witnessed a Great Blue Heron rookery with a fly-by Bullock’s Oriole , a pod of American White Pelicans just chilling, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks making goo-goo eyes at each other, Cliff Swallows swarming like mosquitoes, and Long-billed Curlews that nearly blended into their scrubby surroundings.

White-necked Heron Little Egret Australian Pelicans have arrived to feed on the fish and can be observed very close to the highway. Australian Pelican Glossy Ibis Most of the Magpie Geese families have moved away from the highway now, but there are still some close to the fence-line. All three species of Ibis are now present.
