Of course, I’ve seen live penguins in zoos before, but these were real, honest-to-goodness (and countable!) members of the family Spheniscidae. Penguins, Parrots and Wine on Matiu / Somes Island

The purpose of the trip wasn’t specifically to look for birds, it was my flatmate’s birthday, and her family had booked two of the houses on the island so that we could enjoy a weekend break away to celebrate.
