Culebra is the lesser known of the two major islands that lie off the eastern edge of PuertoRico. But the small island of Culebra, seventeen miles from PuertoRico proper, is more than adequate for a relaxing beach vacation and it can easily keep a birder busy for several days as well. This made me very happy.
I recently asked whether PuertoRico should be part of the American Birding Association’s ABA Area. I will suggest an answer to the question: this post makes the argument that both PuertoRico and the U.S. Now that Hawaii is in the ABA Area , the next additions should be PuertoRico and the U.S.

On our first full day in PuertoRico (Sunday, 15 January), Mike and I decided to start in the east of the island and work our way west. Whether you are a hard-core birder or a family out for a nature walk I think you will enjoy visiting. Make sure to come back soon for the next installment. …
A fine February visit to Culebra, the little island off the eastern end of PuertoRico, netted me some lifers as did my first ever trip to south Florida in late April. The end of July and beginning of August featured an amazing trip across the American west with my family. I didn’t manage a single passable picture.
Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, PuertoRico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and other islands that make up the Greater and Lesser Antilles. With so many book indexes listing species under family name, I am thankful that the decision was made NOT to list all 39 owl species under the heading “Owl.”
I went off to PuertoRico on Sunday night and had a blast and didn’t really give finding the Greater White-fronted Goose in Queens another thought. And, honestly, I feel a little guilty saying that traveling to PuertoRico, Austria, and the Bahamas so far in 2017 is what has kept me from seeing not only a Great Gray Owl but New York’s first Clark’s Grebe and the young Ross’s Gull that was visiting Tupper Lake. Family twitching? Would we do it again?

From 20 February through 25 February I was on a family-and-friends vacation on New Providence in the Bahamas. Though they are reported on occasion from the ponds I never had any luck and had to satisfy myself with La Sagra’s Flycatchers and Loggerhead Kingbirds as the only representatives of the flycatcher family that I would see.
