They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!
Having flown to Washington State on a family vacation the first obstacle was easily out of the way, which you knew already if you ever read this blog. when the puffin flew past, a bird that the whole family can appreciate. The second obstacle was to find a specific location where Fratercula cirrhata is regularly seen.
The river is a stronghold of the endangered Storm’s Stork , a stunning member of the family, and I saw at least one every day I was there. A Rhinoceros Hornbill ! It’s possible to get all 8 of Borneo’s hornbills on the river, I managed Oriental Pied, Black, Bushy-crested, Rhinoceros, and Wrinkled. What a bird!

When all of you are settling in inside away from the snow for family, food and arguments, we’re all getting our travel on. I mean, how do you pick between a handful of broadbills, Rhinoceros Hornbills , two pittas, a falconet and the Whiskered Treeswift ? I was Borneo-bound.
Typical species include busy Secretarybirds that patrol the grasslands, families of Common Ostrich , White-bellied Bustards , Yellow-throated Sandgrouse , vultures, snake-eagles and numerous seedeaters, including lovely Purple Grenadiers and Green-winged Pytlias , to mention just a few. And of course the big game is an added bonus.
And where will I be going that will have the birds I want to see and be acceptable destinations for a non-birding family? Heck, I’m looking forward to seeing Cassin’s Auklet and Rhinoceros Auklet again, birds I have seen one and two times, respectively, to say nothing of Pelagic Cormorants and Brandt’s Cormorants.
This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore.
Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree. Nothing wets the appetite for a birding trip like a map with a Blue-banded Pitta posed in the middle and a Rhinoceros Hornbill flying across the edge! Almost as soon as we left the grounds we came a cross a feeding flock of Pygmy Ibon , a minute type of white-eye (already a small family), and then a handful of bizarre looking Dusky Broadbills (they look like they are manically grinning) perched over a river. We froze, then dashed over to the forest edge.

Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.
That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed. But meanwhile, let’s look at the four avian families that comprise the brand new order Suliformes.
For some reason, the largest member of the heron family is not called the Great Heron nor the Giant Heron but rather the Goliath Heron. So, you would have a “Hippopotamus Egret”, a “Rhinoceros Egret” or an “Elephant Bird” ( source ). Retz’s Helmetshrike is one of the 8 helmetshrikes within the larger family of Vangidae – apparently, a family that evolved from a single Madagascar-based species.
This is not to say, however, that birders on holiday are, should they choose to travel with family, friends or other assorted loved ones, resigned to seeing nothing, or even nothing except the common stuff. I was thus able to pick an off-the-shelf ecotourism route and, having selected a company, customise it to my family’s needs.
For the moment I’ll stick with the split babbler families although I may relump the laughingthrushes, ground and tree babblers per Molye et al (2012).
