A new paper out this month attempts to paint the most comprehensive picture yet of the origins and diversification of the American sparrows, wood-warblers, blackbirds, cardinals, tanagers, and their kin, an enormous group of birds more than 800 species strong. We now know a lot more about who is a tanager vs. a sparrow vs. a cardinal.

The conference timed nicely with sparrow migration and everyone was anxious to get views of reported Nelson’s Sparrows that were obligingly hanging out in some mud along a beaver pond. Other birds can viewed there like the above American Pipit, Wilson’s Snipe and White-crowned Sparrows.

Henslow’s Sparrow at Jacob Riis Park, Queens, New York

He was with some other birders at Jacob Riis Park, out on the barrier beaches of Queens, and they were looking at a Henslow’s Sparrow that Patricia Lindsay had found. We chatted for a bit more and then I hung up and returned to the family. She asked if I wanted to go see the sparrow. Happy Desi and happy Corey.
