They are one of the most famous families of birds, and for good reason. Trinidad and Tobago has historically had seventeen species on record, sixteen on Trinidad and six on Tobago. Oftentimes even the uncommon to scarce residents play nice, one can easily view fifteen species on a single visit to the twin island republic.

That’s because this fascinating part-Caribbean, part-south American country holds well over 800 species of avifauna making it without doubt one of my top three countries in all of the continent to visit. Ok, maybe not the vampire bat…but some of the more “cuddly” species are actually quite easy to see.

Inírida is the capital city of the department of Guainía in the east of Colombia, mere 25 km (15 mi) from the border with Venezuela. Birds The local birdlist has reached 462 species, and some 30 more are expected. Merlin pulls the data out of eBird and was particularly useful in narrowing down the number of species to consider.

It is one of three species of ani ( Groove-billed and Greater Anis are the other two) and together form a unique branch in the cuckoo family. Interestingly, perhaps explaining their widespread distribution that includes many islands, I have observed anis soaring in Venezuela much like a vulture or raptor.

Nick wrote a guest post on Forpus passerinus and the Ornithologists of Masaguaral which was full of passion, humor, and insight into his work while on location in Venezuela. Getting intimate with a species over the course of the breeding cycle is one of the more rewarding aspects of birding, and field research too.

I had fallen asleep on the rocking chair close to the veranda in my little cabin up in the cloud forest of Gabante, Colonia Tovar, Venezuela. Early in 2008 at the opening of the Huellas de Vida show in Maracaibo, a person I met was very impressed and moved by the love of nature and love of family depicted in the artwork.
