The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

In other words, millions of people got together with family and friends for a cozy day of mashed potatoes, gravy, apple pie, naps, football, and some serious turkeyliciousness. That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! Our final turkey is a much-wanted bird on many a birder’s target list.

Watching a Red-tailed Hawk nest

On 12 April, I watched him escort a pair of Turkey Vultures away from the nest. In my next column, I will share more of my observations about the hawk family. Other photos by Kinrys family. I saw her poking around in the nest which made me think she was turning the eggs. The male brought her food which I saw her eating.

Cyprus Delights – Part III

I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. It reminded me of a Roadrunner, which is, of course, also a member of the cuckoo family.

We had an Osprey, Turkey, and Black Vultures , soaring overhead. Other photos by the Kinrys family A female Pileated Woodpecker We saw a few more birds along the boardwalk. A Red-shouldered Hawk was crying as it hunted. A Pileated Woodpecker slipped through the trees. Then, it was time to head home.

Anhinga , otherwise known as Snakebird , Water Turkey , or American Darter * – and more formally as Anhinga anhinga – is a bird I have long wanted to see in New York State. The other nickname, Snakebird , refer to its long neck but, honestly, I am not sure why it would ever be called a Water Turkey.
