I suppose speciesism/human exceptionalism is at the heart of the matter. Kristof writes of the "decent and varied lives" that small farms provide animals with. Food for my soul does not involve grilled greyhound any more than it involves grilled chicken. it's not so bad. I'm not sure how that equals soul.
